The Plain of Jars is an ancient archaeological site at the Xiangkhoang Plateau in Laos, featuring thousands of large stone jars up to 10 feet high and weighing up to 14 tons. Their origin is still a mystery, but archaeologists believe they were used between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago as mortuary urns for a megalithic burial culture. Other theories suggest the jars may have been used to store food, water (especially monsoon rainwater), or even to ferment rice wine for a Race of Giants, as told in local legends. The exact purpose remains under investigation. The thousands of jars were carved from solid rock like sandstone, granite, and limestone in quarries and then transported to their final locations, sometimes miles away. How the ancient culture managed this transportation remains unknown.
